About Steps
We do use some jargon in our trade, but fortunately it is not too complicated. Here is a brief anatomy of steps so you can follow what we say. The diagram opposite shows the elements that make up a sequence of steps, but they are additionally explained below:
Understanding Steps
| Riser: |
This is the vertical height of each step not including the tread height. Most of our steps have risers faced with the same stone as the tread. |
| Tread: |
The tread is what you stand on as you walk up the steps. The depth is measured from its nose to the riser of the next step. However the actual stone is larger as it extends below the riser of the step above. See opposite. |
| Nosing: |
Often the tread sticks out beyond the riser to give steps an attractive finish. This is called the nosing. We can nose our steps in many attractive finishes. |
| Landing: |
Landings are extended treads where people can stand comfortably to rest or wait for a door to be opened. They are often covered in a welcome mat! |
| Step width: |
This is the longest width of the step at right angles to the tread. When steps are contained within a wall they are said to be 'closed steps' if not, they are said to be 'open steps'. |
| Total Rise: |
This is the vertical distance from the bottom of the steps to the top. |
